This program is state-funded and aims to ensure that every Colorado child receives up to 15 hours of FREE preschool each week for the school year before kindergarten.

Who is Eligible for Universal Preschool?

All children in Colorado are eligible in the year before kindergarten and must be 4 years old by October 1.

Is Extended Care Available?

Before- and after-school care is available for families needing additional support. Families may be eligible for more free hours based on a number of qualifying factors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Universal Preschool program is fully funded by the state of Colorado for children that meet the age requirements, regardless of family income.

No, the program is for half days, providing up to 15 hours of free preschool each week.

The Universal Preschool program is part-time, but at the Sunshine House, families have the option of paying for additional hours if they need full-time care.

 📌Some families may also qualify for more free hours based on a number of qualifying factors (see next question).

To qualify for more than 15 hours of free preschool, families must meet one or more of these qualifying factors:

  • Household income is at or below 100% of federal poverty guidelines
  • The child has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
  • The child is a dual language learner, and the family speaks a language other than English at home
  • The child is experiencing homelessness or living in an unstable setting
  • The child is in foster care or kinship

Registration begins in December, but families can contact providers directly to enroll throughout the school year.

Contact your Local Coordinating Organization (LCO) for assistance with the application. They can also help with locating providers, updating your information, and finding other community resources.

Once your application has been submitted, the providers you selected will review your application. They will either accept or decline the match, and then you will have the opportunity to accept or decline the offer. Once accepted, you'll work directly with the provider to complete your child’s enrollment.
